Brunch @ Burpz Cafe // CLOSED
August 9, 2014 in European (cafe) by thywhaleliciousfay
Burpz Cafe is definitely a welcomed addition to Ang Mo Kio. Since it meant I may no longer need to take a 15 minutes bus ride to Thomson when I am in need for coffee. Oh yes, I am a AMK-ian, if there’s such a word. Haha.
I have been to Burpz Cafe twice. Once on a weekend afternoon (4pm) with a group of friends and a second time on a weekday evening (530pm) with my ex-colleague. However, my experience on my second trip was not too pleasant.
On both visits, the cafe was pretty packed although the cafe is not located within walking distance from the nearest MRT station. As I was sitting alfresco on my second visit, I was able to witness people arriving, only to leave as there were no empty tables. Yes, the cafe is this busy. The menu has also changed for August 14.
And from the menu, we ordered:-
1) Luncheon meat fries, $6 (above) – This is a new addition to the menu. With 2 choices for dip, we chose honey mustard over dijon mustard. This was pretty normal. Thankfully, not salty. However, my ex-colleague could not help but comment that it’s pretty expensive since we know the cost price of canned luncheon meat.
2) Egg benedict with proscuitto ham, $14 (above) – This was ordered on my first visit. On the newly revised menu, one can choose their egg benedict to be served with prosciutto ham, smoked salmon or bacon, with either hollandaise sauce or avacado hollandaise sauce at a revised price of $15. The egg benedict was okie, although I felt the sauce was lacking. The presentation was a little messy too, since they piled the vegetables on top of the egg benedict instead of placing it at the side.
3) Seafood pasta, $14 (above) – With choice of tomato, cream, aglio olio or rose sauce and either spaghetti or penne pasta, I went with tomato sauce and spaghetti. Mussels, prawns and squid were used. We thought it was a little too salty.
4) Burpz’s fish & chips, $13.90 (above) – This is unfortunately not available in their revised menu, which is a pity cause this was impressive. The size was huge. Almost every table were ordering this dish too.
5) Rainie heart, $7 (above) – Strawberry cake with slices of fresh, cold strawberries between the layers of sponge. I liked the cream, although the texture of the sponge cake was a little coarse.
6) Cafe Latte, $4 (above)
As mentioned earlier, my experience on my second trip was not too pleasant. We waited for an hour before our main (seafood pasta) was served. The food took longer than normal as the stove was down. However, we were not informed about the delay till 50 minutes into our wait. Burpz Cafe should definitely improve on their management of customer’s expectations / damage control. Of course, it did not help that we came when the sky was bright but our food was served after it got dark.
Other than that, Burpz Cafe is definitely a welcomed addition to Ang Mo Kio neighbourhood. They are probably targeting residents and students from neighbouring schools as they revamp their menu regularly for increased variety.
