Dinner @ Kaiho Sushi // CLOSED
November 9, 2014 in Japanese by thywhaleliciousfay
For some odd reason, I felt as though I haven’t had any Japanese recently, when in reality I did. But I digress. Ha! After my last good dining experience at Cuppage Plaza (like finally! after so many fails), I was interested to check out the other Japanese places in Cuppage Plaza. And with that, my friend and I decided to try Kaiho Sushi.
He was a little skeptical though. “Is it a yakitori or sushi bar?” he asked. “Sushi bar”, I said. To which he replied that it’s not cheap dining at the sushi bars in Cuppage Plaza as they often charge more since mostly Japanese patronize the place.
But obviously, I insisted. Haha.
It being a somewhat impromptu dinner (my friend and I couldn’t match our schedules), we did not make any reservation. We arrived pretty late at 9pm. Yes, that’s how impromptu our dinner was.
We arrived to a somewhat empty eatery. I guess many don’t stay out late on a Tuesday night! My friend and I opted for counter seats over table seats.
And from the menu (pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9), we ordered:-
1) Bernard’s 7-courses omakase, $100 comprised of:-
(A) Starter (above) – Salmon head soft bone. We were told this was from the salmon nose bridge area. A pretty peculiar texture and taste I would say.
(B) Sashimi (above) – The menu stated ‘toro fatty tuna, red tuna, salmon and scallop’, but I guess sashimi was offered based on what’s available for the season.
(C) Nigiri sushi (above) – We were given 5 pieces. 1 of which included toro, as stated on the menu. These were definitely fresh although I noticed the salmon was sliced thicker than the rest. Similarly so for our sashimi platter.
(D) Soup (above) – Nameko and mixed mushroom clear soup.
(E) Grill (above) – With an option of either salmon teriyaki or kama shioyaki, I am so glad we chose the latter. There was plenty of of meat from the cheek, which was really juicy too!
(F) Deep fry (above) – Kisu fish tempura. This was really good too.
(G) Dessert (above) – With flavours of green tea, black sesame, citrus and chestnut to choose from, we went with black sesame.
2) Ika shiokara, $9 (above) – Preserved squid. Wanting to try more, we ordered additional dishes from the a-la carte menu. When we placed our order with the staff and was talking among ourselves, wondering if we should order this, chef Bernard stepped in and said most could only have a maximum of 5, and paired with rice. And after tasting this, we understood why. As with the name, these preserved squids were really salty, especially when we bit into them. I only managed to have one.
3) Ikura uni ae, $28 (above) – Raw salmon’s roe and sea urchin. Served on a bed of white baits, this was the biggest ‘tongue’ of sea urchin I ever had. Even beats eating these creamy goodness (directly out) from a shell.
4) Sake aburi sushi, $5 (above) – Seared salmon sushi. And as many had raved, this was indeed not too bad. There are a total of 9 flavours for aburi which included scallop ($9), wagyu beef ($15) and fatty tuna ($20). Price mentioned is for a piece.
5) Tobiko makimono, $6 (above) – Flying fish roe seaweed roll.
Overall, it was an average experience. Kaiho Sushi is not big on its interior decor, so I would say it’s more for a fuss-free dinner. And of course, what’s good was that their omakase sets were affordable.
And while I suspected chef Bernard probably did it out of convenience, I would have preferred our dishes for omakase to be served in sequence where nigiri sushi should be served last instead of at the the start. But that’s a personal preference although I was okie with it coming first as we happened to be really hungry.
