Lunch @ Wong Chi Kei (Macau)
February 28, 2015 in Chinese by thywhaleliciousfay
And although it was our repeated trip to Macau, my friends and I decided to stick to (re-)trying all the signature dishes in Macau instead of exploring new eateries. Ha. Thus, it was a must for us to have the signature shrimp roe noodles at Wong Chi Kei when we were in Senado Square.

We reached Wong Chi Kei during lunch time. And it despite being a weekday, a long queue had formed outside the restaurant. Well, it’s not really a restaurant in Singapore’s context. It’s more like a… Tea house?
We were given a queue number after registering ourselves with the lady at the counter. And we waited almost 20 minutes before our number was flashed on the electronic display. Wong Chi Kei occupied a 3-storey shop house. But what we did not know was that they also had basement level! Got to know that only because the table allocated to us was in the basement.
And from the menu (pages 1, 2), we ordered:-
1) 酥炸水餃, MOP64 (10 pieces) (above) – Deep fried shrimp dumpling. These were huge! Crispy and of course, oily. I liked the fried dumplings with the plum sauce that came along with it. Comes in smaller portion of 5 pieces for MOP34.
2) 鮮蝦雲吞, MOP40 (above) – Wanton in soup.
3) 燒鴨肉丸粥, MOP44 (above) – Barbecued duck & meat balls congee.
4) 牛腩捞麵, MOP44 (above) – Braised noodle with cow’s flank.
5) 招牌蝦子撈麺, MOP57 (above) – Braised noodle with shrimp’s eggs. Oddly, I did not really like this. It was a little too dry. But to have (crunchy) shrimp’s egg as the only other ingredient, it gave the entire dish an interesting (chew) texture.
With Wong Chi Kei being one of the must-go-to eateries in Macau, especially when one is in Senado Square, I would encourage others to try their dumplings too. Either the soup or deep fried version. Or even both. Yes, not just for their signature shrimp roe noodle, which was not my favourite. And the fact that Wong Chi Kei is conveniently located in Senado Square, one could even make repeated trips back if one can’t try all of these (dishes) in 1 trip.
