Dinner @ FYR Cycene Ond Drinc

May 19, 2015 in European by thywhaleliciousfay

I was in the area with my family at Thian Hock Keng temple to celebrate the birthday of Ma Zu (Goddess of the Sea). The celebration ended around 9pm. And while thinking of where to head to fill up our stomachs, I immediately suggested heading to FYR Cycene Ond Drinc which was just around the corner. A group of my girlfriends were also having dinner (there) since 8pm.

Arriving at 9pm, the only tables left were the high tables as my family and I walked in with no reservation.

And from the menu (pages 1, 2, 3), we ordered:-

1) Roasted US bay scallop, $13 (above) – With fennel, raspberry walnut vinaigrette, local basil pesto.

2) Roasted duck foie gras, $13 (above) – With butter toasted brioche, mixed berries, gula melaka. This was average. It would have been better if the foie gras was slightly thicker for a more impact-ful melt-in-the-mouth sensation. And of course, my brothers and I couldn’t quite make out of the super small piece brioche. Shouldn’t it be (more) proportionate to the foie gras?

3) Seafood linguine, $18 (above) – With lobster bisque, laksa leaves, Thai basil. This was good. Perfectly cooked al dente pasta with a generous amount of seafood which included prawns, clams and octopus.

4) Baby back lamb ribs, iberico pork collar, $68 (above) – With buttered cassava and house salad with Java curry dressing. This was supposed to be a combination of lamb ribs, pork collar and ribeye. However, as we don’t take beef, we enquired if it was possible to order without the beef. And after the staff checked with the kitchen, our ribeye was replaced with more lamb ribs. And from the menu, we could choose 2 of the 3 sauces. And while we were deciding which 2, the staff very graciously said he will let us try all 3; Black truffle, foie gras and tomato cilantro salsa. Keke. My brothers enjoyed the meat very much although there was a slight inconsistency in the ribs. The smaller portion of lamb ribs were a little too fatty for my liking. But that aside, the meat platter was good.

5) Sliced deboned red snapper, $25 (above) – With sambal belacan, mashed potato and house salad with Java curry dressing. And this was the highlight of our dinner. Probably it’s because the snapper was deboned that the space created from the removed bone allowed the dressing to thoroughly marinate the meat from within. So good! And having the bone removed prior to serving the fish allowed us to tuck in peacefully. A must try.

6) Baked pistachio melt & pandan ice cream, $10 (above) – With pandan creme anglaise, pistachio, cinnamon. This was slightly sweet, but I really liked their take on the molten lava cake. Picture flowing pandan lava when we sliced through the cake with our fork. And it was innovative that they topped it with a marshmallow. It’s quite a visual to see the marshmallow melt from the warmth of the lava cake.

7) Banana parfait, $10 (above) – With grilled banana, gula melaka, parmesan. Slightly crack open the milk chocolate sphere to expose the ice cream within. I did not really like this though. I felt the combination of chocolate and ice cream with permesan cheese was kinda odd.

8) Truffle chocolate, Complimentary (above)

Remember how I mentioned my group of girlfriends were dining at FYR Cycene Ond Drinc before I came with my family? Complimentary chocolate in gold-coloured boxes were given to my girlfriends at the end of their dinner. So I’m not sure if it’s because my family and I finished our dinner late (almost at their closing time) that they could have run out of chocolate and thus not giving us any. Or that the staff could have just plain forgotten. Which was pretty sad cause 1 of my girlfriends passed me her chocolate on her way out and the chocolate was thick, dense and good! So we were looking forward to our complimentary chocolates at the end of our meal. Complimentary chocolate which did not come. =(

Will I recommend FYR Cycene Ond Drinc? Well… In terms of food, there are hits and misses. Of all the dishes, I enjoyed the grilled fish, linguine and lava cake. Service was great though! We had a few requests and the waiting staff were happy to help us out. You know how some staff will pull long faces? Ha. So yes, thank you for accommodating to our requests!
