Brunch @ Luxe Singapore // CLOSED

January 21, 2016 in European (cafe) by thywhaleliciousfay

I be honest. The cafe scene is really saturated. So while we may have more options, many cafes fall short of my expectations. So hmm… For me, a cafe should serve good food, great coffee and have a nice ambience.

So when I got to read about Luxe Singapore, Luxe Sydney’s first overseas restaurant-bar, I was excited. They looked promising. And with that, a brunch session with my friends was arranged. Well… Not just one time, but two! Yes! Cause I was impressed with my first visit that a second trip was arranged so that I could try more of what Luxe Singapore has to offer for food. =)

Taken from their website, Luxe Singapore serves contemporary Australian cuisine with a Southeast Asian twist with head chef Chui Lee Luk’s Asian roots. The menu pays particular attention to tropical ingredients and produce from around the region, and is tied to regional rather than Western seasons.

A call was made 2 days in advance to make reservation for a Saturday. However, upon hearing that we were a group smaller than 6, we were told we could walk in instead. And for my two visits, we were seated almost immediately. On my first visit, we waited around 15 minutes while we were seated immediately on my second.

And I really like how the cafe was furnished. It was spacious, ‘clean cut’ and even cosy. I really liked the vibe of the place. One could even grab glimpse of what happens within the kitchen as they have allowed for a somewhat open-kitchen concept.

And from the menu (pages 1, 2), we ordered:-

1) Keong saik fried chicken & chilli, $15 (above) – I love my chicken wings, and these were pretty good despite its look; The wings were served looking like they were over-fried. Haha. This was a little spicy for a non-spicy eater like me, but the meat was tender and juicy!

2) Grilled octopus, $21 (above) – With Chui’s housemade XO sauce. This was pretty interesting. But when it was shared among 3 hungry ladies, the portion was a little small. More please? Hee!

3) Braised lamb shoulder, $25 (above) – With flatbread, red onion, mint & garlic yoghurt. My friends did not like this. They couldn’t take the overpowering taste of the lamb. So I guess this is a either-you-love-this-or-hate this kinda dish.

4) Royale, $20 (above) – With smoked salmon & hollandaise.

5) Ricotta hotcake, $20 (above) – With berries, exploding candy & maple syrup. I was disappointed with this dish. Frankly, I had expected more in terms of plating.

6) Grilled sakura chicken breast, $28 (above) – With lettuce & housemade chilli sauce.l

7) Spaghetti with grilled prawns, cherry tomatoes & chilli, $34 (above)

8) Latte, $5 (above)

Will I recommend Luxe Singapore? Definitely! So while they may charge a little more than the average ‘cafe price’, I am happy to fork out that little more. I mean (good) food aside, the ambience was wonderful while service was great too!

The waiting staff came across as warm and happy-to-help. In fact, we had a little incident with our orders. While placing our order for the burger, we conveniently pointed at the menu and went “chicken”. That may accidentally caused a miscommunication cause we were served the half chicken (from under the ‘meats’ instead of ‘burgers’). The staff (not the same staff who took our order) helped to take the wrong dish back to the kitchen and had our order promptly changed.

My girlfriends and I were a little embarrassed cause we felt we could have been clearer while placing our order. But what we didn’t expect was that the staff who took our order came over and apologized for the mistake. He really didn’t need to do that, but it was very nice he did that.
