Having to make a trip to Katong, I decided to fully utilise my trip to the East by doing a little cafe hopping too. And with that, I went with Maple & Market as it’s easily accessible from Dakota / Mountbatten MRT stations. A 10 minutes walk!

And from the menu / display shelf, I ordered:-

1) Assorted fruits & maple syrup waffle, $9 (above) – 3 options are offered for their buttermilk waffles. The other two being caramelised bananas, homemade caramel & walnuts ($9) and plain with maple syrup ($4). I liked the waffle, especially the crackling sound as my knife sliced through the crispy exterior of the waffle! Keke. The waffle was served drizzled with maple syrup in a good amount. Instead, it’s the banana bits which were sliced a little too thin.

2) Gula Melaka Cafe, $5.50 (above) – With kaya cream cheese frosting and caramelised almonds. Dubbed as their signature cake, I felt like I was eating the cake version of a malay dessert. It’s one very sweet cake. The coconut shavings and almond flakes introduced a good contrast to the really dense (and again, sweet) sponge.

3) Earl grey lemon loaf, $3 (above) – The frosting was really sour (but hey, the word ‘lemon’ is not stated for nothing), while the sponge was a little dry. Cause of the black freckles / grains in the sponge, I kept thinking I was eating a banana cake with a faint hint of earl grey. It would also be better if loaf was sliced a little thicker.

4) Latte, $4.50 (above)

Maple & Market being a bakery instead of a cafe carries waffles and baked goodies only. As such, I recommend dropping by for the sweets after a meal at Old Airport Market which is just around the corner. However, as the place is pretty small (they can house up to 12 people), I guess the place gets packed easily on weekends. So one may consider take aways, which I notice many did that while I was there.
