Dinner @ Gerry’s Grill

While arranging the farewell dinner for 1 of our interns, we (seniors) decided to double it up as a session where our Filipino team mates would introduce us to their cuisine. Keke. And through my Filipino colleagues, reservation was made at Gerry’s Grill which they highly recommended.
Reservation is definitely required. The restaurant was bustling with hungry (and noisy) diners when we reached at 7pm.
And from the menu (pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10), we ordered:-
1) Lumpiang Shanghai, $8.95 (above) – One could either order this from the menu, or order a bucket of beer and be given a complimentary appetiser. We went with the latter. Keke. And this was the Filipino’s take of popiah.
2) Chili cheese sticks, $7.95 (above) – We contemplated ordering this dish because our Filipino colleagues said it would be spicy. But honestly, it was not as spicy as they warned scared us. Though I wished there was more cheese within the chili. And yes, we got this dish complimentary with our (second) bucket of beer. Keke.
3) Chichabits, $7.95 (above) – Pork cracklings. Super crispy and not too oily although it’s a deep fried dish. So, so good! This is a must order! Went super well with our beer. And yes, one could choose this as the complimentary appetiser with one’s order of bucket of beer. Guess it’s no surprise for me to share my colleagues and I got this dish complimentary with our… Third bucket of beer. We are a bunch of beer-loving team. Haha.
4) Inihaw na liempo, $12.95 (above) – Grilled pork. This was average. I would give it a miss.
5) Inihaw na tuna belly, $14.95 (above)
6) Sugba kilaw, $14.95 (above) – Mackarel with grilled pork belly. My intern went “The fish is raw inside!” with a very shocked expression on his face. So when I took my first bite of the fish, I was very cautious. I thought I would be disappointed. But no, this turned out to be really good. I especially liked the sauce. A must order.
7) Spicy garlic fried chicken, $13.95 (above)
8) Inihaw na pusit, $16.95 (above) – Grilled squid.
9) Sizzling kangkong, $7.95 (above)
10) Sizzling sisig, $11.95 (above) – Chopped pork cheeks sauteed in garlic and onion. And when we were looking at the menu, my Filipino colleagues said we had to tried the sisih. And try, we will. But what we weren’t expecting was that every part of the pig’s head was used. Yes, including the snout and ears! Well, okie. Pig ears are delicious. But… Snout? Gasp. But this was pretty yummy. With a raw egg served too, we were told to quickly mix everything up on the hot dish.
11) Sizzling bangus sisig, $11.95 (above) – And this would be the healthier version with milkfish instead of pork. However, I preferred the pork version which my Filipino colleagues mentioned is the original.
12) Crispy pata, $25.95 (above) – Crispy pork knuckles.
13) Pancit bihon, $8.45 (above) – Somehow, we were craving for carb(ohydrate). And with that, we ordered stir-fried noodle which I enjoyed much.
14) Sinigang na bangus belly, $12.45 (above) – Milkfish in tamarind soup. Too salty for my liking.
15) Leche flan, $3.95 (above)
16) Halo-halo, $5.45 (above)
17) Mais con hielo, $5.45 (above) – Everything corn!
Honestly, one needs to be open-minded to really enjoy Filipino cuisine. Especially if one is trying it for the first time. It wouldn’t be right to try and benchmark it against Chinese cuisine. Although I wasn’t used to some of the flavours, I enjoyed the food served at Gerry’s Grill.
And the restaurant was great for big gatherings. My colleagues were loud and rowdy. But that didn’t matter at Gerry’s Grill. And although they close at 10pm, they didn’t chase us out when we hung around till 11pm. Oops. Would definitely recommend Gerry’s Grill for authentic pinoy food.
