Brunch @ Open Farm Community

Most would probably notice from my recent instagram posts that I’m making the conscious effort to eat clean. Although I got to admit it can be a struggle cause I love my deep fried food. Haha. So when I got to learn about Open Farm Community, I was pretty excited to check them out.

A collaboration between The Spa Esprit Group, celebrity chef Ryan Clift and award-winning food garden specialist Edible Garden City, Open Farm Community sets out to be a farm-to-table restaurant.

And to say they are a restaurant… Isn’t quite accurate. Almost 70% of the area was dedicated to non-restaurant stuff. One would think sane businessmen would want to maximize the land and get as much returns as they possibly can. But at Open Farm Community, they were different in the sense that space was allowed for a big outdoors recreation space (table tennis table and playground) and farm!

Taken from their website, Open Farm Community aims to bring to life the impact of urban farming in Singapore. And in doing so, to strengthen our understanding and respect for food and its origins. In addition to promoting balanced living and education through farming workshops, events and activities.

My girlfriends assisted to make reservation since it was going to be an outing to celebrate my birthday! Keke. We decided to go for their brunch which was from 11am to 3pm. But what took my girlfriend by surprise was that she had to leave her credit card details as $50 would be charged for no show. So one may wish to take note!

And thankfully, Open Farm Community is located at the lower half of Dempsey Hill. So people like me who take public transport (bus) would not need to walk (too) far up from the main road. Keke.

And from the brunch menu (pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7), we ordered:-

1) Seared tuna, $26 (above) – With green papaya & jicama salad, fresh coconut & dashi vinegar.

2) Potato rosti, $28 (above) – Scrambled eggs, sliced pork sausages, creme fraiche & red onion brown jus. It’s a little odd that this was called ‘potato rosti’ cause the rosti only made up 20% of the dish.

  

3) Eggs benedict, $24 (above) – With poached chicken, spinach, semi-dried tomatoes, sourdough & green curry hollandaise sauce. Give this a skip. We were expecting a more generous serving. The (可怜) girlfriend’s husband who ordered this was still hungry despite having it all for himself.

4) Truffle scrambled organic egg, $24 (above) – With shimeji mushrooms, portobello mushrooms, baby spinach & sourdough.

5) Buttermilk pancake, $22 (above) – With creme patisserie, poached strawberries & ice cream.

6) Mud crab spaghettoni, $28 (above) – With Thai curry sauce, crunchy yellow squash, coconut, crispy shallot, Thai basil. Said to be homemade pasta, the noodles were thick and chewy. Not too bad, though the portion was a little on the small side.

7) Roasted baby chicken, $28 (above) – Braised leeks with hazelnut butter & wild watercress salad.

8) Lemon tart with basil ice-cream, $17 (above) – Of the 2 desserts we ordered, this was my favourite. Although we ‘destroyed’ it when we tried to slice through; The entire ensemble collapsed under our fork as we couldn’t ‘break’ the top layer successfully. Haha!

9) Hot & cold chocolate cake with chocolate sorbet & mint, $17 (above) – And yes, a candle added for the birthday girl (me).

10) Virgin mojito, $12 (above) – Apple juice, soda, mint, lime. Somehow, this tasted very much like lemonade. Ha!

11) Latte, $5.50 (above)

We certainly enjoyed the ambience of Open Farm Community. There was a certain class about the place, yet one wouldn’t feel out-of-place if one was too casually donned or very dressed up. However, food wise… Well, let’s say the portion could be bigger. Much bigger. It was pretty expensive.

Service was great! Staff were friendly and had a good sense of humour. You know how most staff would just take orders and leave? The staff at Open Farm Community made the effort to be personal as they engaged conversations with patrons, yet without being too intrusive. We made a booking for 6. So while waiting for the rest to arrive, the punctual ones decided to order drinks first. After taking our order, the staff joked and asked, “Would you like a group picture? You could also send to your (latecomer) friends.” Haha.

And have I mentioned how much I love their plates? For real. (^^lll) Keke.

Brunch @ Kitchenette

I don’t normally have any reason to be in Novena. But because of work, I had the chance to be on a few occasions. And while wondering where to have lunch, I suddenly thought of Kitchenette! Just nice. Keke. And so, I managed to lunch at Kitchenette twice.

Kitchenette is located in Goldhill Plaza, which is a short 5 to 8 minutes walk from Novena MRT station. One would just need to cross the traffic junction. Kitchenette is what we could call a ‘simple shop’. They are not huge on their interior design. Instead, a tall cabinet of wine bottles occupied 1 of the walls in the unit. Apparently, they/re also a bottle shop. Taken from their website, their wines are handpicked from all over the globe, including lesser-known regions. They aim to allow all to taste excellent wines at reasonable prices. And one can choose to take the wine home or consume at the cafe (with no corkage charge).

And from the menu (pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5), I ordered:-

1) 3 course lunch, $23 comprised of:-

(A) Soup of the day (above) – This was average. But I just realised (while doing up this review) my bread were not served although the menu stated the soup would come with bread slices.


(B) Beer battered fish & chips (above) – With a choice between ribeye steak and fish & chips for my main, I went with the latter since I don’t take beef. Batter was light and crispy, while fish was moist. However, I thought something was missing from the batter. It was.. Slightly bland. Thus explaining my usage of ‘light’ to describe the batter.

(C) Cake of the day (above) – Red velvet cake was the cake of the day. When I took a look at the cakes within the display shelf, I couldn’t help but noticed that I would be served the last slice. And when I had my cake, I wondered if they were trying to ‘clear stock’ cause the red velvet cake was dry (in the stale sense). It would have been better if they served the carrot cake which looked better.

  

(D) Cafe latte (above) – With a choice of either coffee or tea for my 3 courses lunch set, I chose latte which I had to top up another $1.50. On my second visit, I ordered my latte a-la carte and paid $5. And for their 3D latte art, one would need to request while placing order.

2) English waffle, $14 (above) – With veal sausage, scrambled eggs, bacon.

3) Chocolate banana waffle, $10.50 (above) – With Hershey chocolate, caramelised banana. This was good!

If one is in Novena and is looking for a quiet place to dine (since it gets really crowded at the eateries in Novena Square Shopping Mall and Novena Square 2), one may consider Kitchenette. On my 2 visits, the cafe was not too busy and thus easy to get seats. Maybe because I came on weekdays. Am not too sure about weekends.

And to entice the working crowd, Kitchenette has pretty good 1-for-1 deals. Like 1-for-1 waffles for Wednesdays and 1-for-1 fish & chips on Thursdays.

Brunch @ The Book Cafe

My brother had recommended me The Book Cafe for their wonderful ambience. He enjoys heading over for his ‘me time’ where he will read his book.

Thus, when my girlfriend and I were to be in the area to catch a theatrical performance, we decided to head over. And the cafe was packed with people! There’s basically 3 seating areas. 1, the alfresco seats. 2, indoors with normal chairs where most of the eating occurred. And 3, indoors with sofa seats where most were working on their laptops. I observed it will be odd to take the sofa seats to eat and disperse the aroma of food when most in that area were ‘working’. Ha!

The Book Cafe don’t take reservation on weekends. But since my girlfriend and I were (only) there for a quick lunch, we were glad there were indoors seats for us to escape from the heat (outside). In fact, I loved the ambience so much that I got another friend to head back for brunch on another weekend!

And from the menu (pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12), we ordered:-

1) Smoked salmon, $14.95 (above) – Two eggs any style, has brown, toast, grilled cherry tomatoes & smoked salmon.

2) Bangers & mash, $15.95 (above) – Chicken or bratwurst sausages with mashed potatoes, topped with brown sauce.

3) Carbonara, $15.75 (above) – Bacon, mushroom in cream sauce.

4) Wing zing, $10.95 (above)

5) Natsu beri shibuya toast, $10.50 (above) – Strawberries, chocolate sauce, pistachio nuts & ice cream.

6) Traditional apple pie, $5.95 (above)

7) Cafe latte, $5.50 (above)

Food wise, it was pretty mediocre. However, it was the ambience of the cafe that I really liked. So while the decor of the place was very simple, I liked its coziness. I am already thinking of joining the ‘sofa group’ by bringing my laptop on weekends when I brought work home. Ha. But cause there’s limited sofa seats, one may also consider alfresco seats which some were also working on their laptops at! Of course, one need not be working on one’s laptop. One could also borrow their books and magazines!
