Brunch @ Henri Charpentier

December 4, 2014 in European (cafe)

Henri Charpentier, a French-inspired Japanese patisserie, has opened a dessert salon on our island in October 2014 as part of its global expansion outside of Japan.

And since we were in Dempsey (for exercise *gasp*), my girlfriends and I managed to pop by twice. On a weekday evening and a weekend afternoon. And because we entered during meal times, the restaurant was a little quiet since Henri Charpentier is more well-known for their desserts.

The first thought that I had when we entered the place was that the massive use of pink did not seem to go well with the shop name. I mean, doesn’t Henri (a guy’s name) sound too masculine for pink? Haha. =p And having read that their prices were on the high side, my girlfriends and I came with the intention to order just a few dishes. A few.

And from the menu (pages 1, 2, 3, 4), we ordered:-

1) Ratatouille and parmesan cheese tartine, $19 (above) – An original take on the classic open sandwich, made with house ratatouille and parmesan cheese. We were really hungry after our exercise, so we ordered a main to fill up our stomachs. And this tasted very much like our pizza where ingredients were placed on a bread and topped with lots of cheese. Not exactly impressive, but good enough to fill us up as we continued to wait for our desserts.

2) Dome, $29 (above) – The chocolate sphere encloses a chocolate parfait biscuit of fraise d’amande. And we chose to order Dome, 1 of the 6 desserts made exclusive to the Singapore menu. And for this, the dessert was prepared in front of us where we were treated to a flambe performance. As the ball of chocolate was set on fire, the chocolate melted to expose what was hidden within, to which the staff further poured some strawberry sauce over. Not too bad.

3) Crepe suzette, $22 (above) – A signature dessert of Henri Charpentier. We initially did not intend to order this, but we couldn’t resist after we smelled the aroma when the staff prepared this for our neighboring table. Thin crepes cooked by hand in a copper pan. We especially liked the sauce of orange juice and liqueur. But at $22, the price would have been better justified if there were 3 pieces instead of 2. My girlfriend called this “mee hoon kway”. Silky mee hoon kway. Haha.

4) Mille-crepe, $9 (above) – Ten layers of moist, soft thin crepes and thick, rich custard cream.

5) Mont blanc, $9 (above) – Almond financier with chestnut, whipped cream and rum chestnut cream. This was not too bad, although I say mont blanc is a dessert which one needs to learn to appreciate.

6) Lemon tart, $7.50 (above) – The classic French favourite made with a flaky crust and tart lemon cream.

7) Financier, $2.90 (above, left) – This was pretty good. Slightly crispy on the exterior, and really buttery (said to be original cultured butter from Hokkaido) and moist on the inside.

8) Madeleine, $2.90 (above, right) – Almost similar to the financier, but this had a stronger flavour. Vanilla? Taken from their website, this was made from a mixture of Hokkaido wheat, Jamaican rum, Sugarcane Rum, lemons and honey.

So frankly, our dining experiences at Henri Charpentier were of mixed feelings. So while the desserts tasted good, they were expensive especially with the small portions. Service was not exactly brilliant. On our first visit, they forgot to key in our orders and we foolishly waited for our dessert for an hour. (^^lll) We really thought the staff needed that long to prepare our non-cake dessert since we noticed there was only one cart going round doing the flambé performances.

And it was definitely frustrating cause the staff only knew how to smile and apologise. It took 3 enquiries (from us) before the staff realised our orders were not keyed in! But somehow, we still had a roaring good time thanks to the manager. A really tall Japanese guy. He was amused by our reactions as he did our flaming desserts, and joked quite a fair bit with us.

So yes, I say drop by Henri Charpentier for desserts only if one is in Dempsey and if one does not mind the price tag. Cheapest being the lemon tart which starts at $7.50. And if one is coming for the flaming desserts, do try to come in the evening or later. When we were there in the day, we witnessed a table not being able to see the blue flames under the strong sunlight. We were sitting near them and their dessert was in full view, and we couldn’t see the blue flames to their dessert too.

When we checked with the humourous manager, he also said the flames were more visible in the night. Actually, I am not too sure if he managed to understand us right. In his exact words, he replied us with “Yes, yes, After 7pm. Better. (And) I do the cart after 7pm.” Haha.

Sweets @ Kki Sweets

October 16, 2014 in European (cafe)

I have long heard about Kki sweets, but I missed my chance when they moved out from Ann Siang before I could visit. So when they reopened at School Of The Arts (SOTA), I made sure I was quick in making a visit. Well, many visits. Keke.

SOTA is just beside The Cathay which means Kki Sweets is within walking distance from Dhoby Ghaut MRT station. Walk up the long flight of stairs to reach level 2 where Kki is located at. They are at the end nearer to PoMo.

Upon entering the beautiful space, do wait in line for one’s turn to order the cake. After which, the staff will assign a table. My favorite got to be table no. 4!

And from the display shelf, I ordered:-

1) Nao, $9.80 (above) – Strawberry mousse with pistachio.

2) Onigiri, $9 (above) – Basil milk mousse with blood orange.

3) Antoinette, $8.80 (above) – White chocolate mousse with mango.

4) Cafe dumo, $9.80 (above) – Milk chocolate coffee mousse.

5) Fromage melon, $8.80 (above) – Cheese mousse with rock melon.

6) Tiramisu, $9.80 (above) – Mascarpone cheese mousse with kahlua. Contains alcohol.

7) L.R.R.H, $9.80 (above) – Dark chocolate mousse with raspberry.

8) Mont blanc, $9.80 (above) – Chestnut paste with fresh crème on almond tart base.

9) Kinabaru, $8.80 (above) – Coconut mousse with passionfruit.

10) Latte, $4.80 (above)

11) Green tea (Tsugaru), $4.80 (above) – Apple flavored. Asked for a recommendation for their hot tea and was recommended this from their drinks menu. Let the tea leaves soak for 1-2 minutes before enjoying.

And as one can see, I went a little crazy. Haha. When I learnt that they have a total of 12 flavours, I made a pact with myself to conquer all. Ahhh… The things I do to myself my thick waist. Haha. But the quest was sweet as their cakes were delectable, though slightly costly. One small cake set me back by at least $10 after including GST and service charge. But it’s quality over quantity. =)

And in an attempt to complete my quest, I have made 5 trips altogether. Alone and with friends. Of which 1 was take away. Although an ice pack was put within the box, lady boss said the cakes should be consumed as soon as possible.

If one is really interested in trying the cakes and wants to be able to choose from a variety (although the most I saw was 9 flavours at one time), one got to come early. If one is in luck, there may be 1 to 2 flavours left in very limited quantity on a weekday late afternoon (5.30pm). Whereas the cakes sell out by 5pm on weekends even though they do bring out more at around 3pm. Saw them doing that on my most recent visit on Saturday. If not I wouldn’t have been able to buy the ‘mont blanc’. Keke.

I will recommend the cakes at Kki Sweets. Not just for the cakes, but for the ambience. Got to chat a little with the friendly lady boss and learnt a little about the Japanese culture where Japanese would eat their cakes with a cup of tea/coffee. And she advised not to eat more than 2 cakes per visit. If not by the 3rd cake, one can’t taste or appreciate the flavour. This is not a cake buffet, kie! Ha.

Stopped at 9 flavours cause I don’t seem to have much fate with the other 3. I know the 10th flavour is a cheesecake. Do let me know what’s the 11th and 12th flavour! =)

Brunch @ Plain Vanilla Bakery

June 16, 2014 in American, European (cafe)

Plain Vanilla has been around for some time, so why the sudden post? That’s because while I have long heard about them, I have not tried their cupcakes. *Sheepish grin*

Was at Tiong Bahru Market with my girlfriends when one of them insisted that we are to go to Plain Vanilla. So wala! And I am glad she insisted because the cupcakes were so good! In fact, they were so good that I’ve made 2 (more) trips since.

The space is divided into two. First half is the non air-conditioned seating area, with second half being where the goodies are. No seats within this air-conditioned second half. Dining in will be a little tricky especially for a big group as seats are very limited.

Cupcakes are $3.50 each or $19 for every six. Permanent flavours include carrot, cinnamon brown sugar, chocolate hazelnut, cookies & cream, dark chocolate ganache, milk chocolate banana, milk chocolate chip, strawberry white chocolate and red velvet. Dont go too late though. On my 2nd (of 3) trip back, only 3 flavours were left at 5pm.

Cupcakes are packed into these beautiful boxes! Do note that you will need to get at least 4 to be packed into a box. Tried to purchase 3 on my 2nd trip and was told I had to get 4 before my cupcakes can be packed into the box. Hmm… But what if I only had cash for 3 and I had specially made a trip for these cupcakes? You want to put them in plastic bags or ask me to walk empty handed? (I got 4, by the way. 2 repeated flavour)

And from the display, I ordered (from my 2nd and 3rd trips):-

1) Red velvet, $3.50 (above)

2) Cinnamon brown sugar, $3.50 (above)

3) Milk chocolate banana, $3.50 (above)

4) Salted caramel, $3.50 (above)

5) Cookies & cream, $3.50 (above)

6) Carrot, $3.50 (above)

7) Milk chocolate chip, $3.50 (above)

8) Strawberry white chocolate, $3.50 (above)

My favourite will be the strawberry white chocolate! The cupcakes were light and moist, while the frosting was not too sweet and in a right proportion. Even my siblings loved it when I brought the cupcakes back to share. So yes, I will recommend dropping by to buy some back when you are cafe hopping in Tiong Bahru vicinity.
