Dinner @ Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice

October 3, 2017 in Chinese

It has been a long while since my last siblings’ dinner out. My younger brother suggested heading to Traditional Sembawang Claypot Rice (TSCP) because he recently chanced upon the place and enjoyed the food at TSCP much. So yes! If it’s approved by my brother, I am sure it’s good.

And boy was my brother right.

The thing about zi char… It’s always better to come in a big group. So when my siblings and I went, we could only order 4 dishes. And because I enjoyed the food so much, I popped by 5 days later with a colleague for late dinner. Keke.

Reservation is a definite must if one is coming during peak hours or in big groups. My sibling assisted with the reservation and shared that the restaurant took down his contact number only. Hmm. Not of his name too?

But of course, the con about the location was parking. If one intends to park at the lots within the private house estate, please make sure to put parking coupon! When colleague and I arrived on the second occasion at 9pm, he decided to take the risk of not putting since free parking starts at 10pm. Bad move. We joked that the parking attendant must be staying in one of the landed properties because my colleague’s ticket was timed 9.12pm. Gasp.

And from the menu (pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), we ordered:-

1) Crispy salted egg sotong, $12.80 (above)

2) Hakka crispy pork, $12.80 (above)

3) Garlic fried chicken, $12.80 (above)

4) Qing long cai, $12.80 (above)

5) San lao bee hoon, $8.80 (large) (above) – Let’s be real… I think san lao beehoon is almost synonymous with J.B Ah Meng. So although it wasn’t fair to compare the two since they are cooked with different style, comparing was still inevitable. And the difference between the two was TSCR’s was paler in colour and the burnt surface was not as charred. But the (real) distinct difference was TSCR’s was cooked with prawn, pork, egg and vegetables and was wet with (some) gravy at the bottom. TSCR’s was still enjoyable, but not my favourite rendition of san lao beehoon.

6) La la bee hoon, $4.80 (small) (above)

7) Claypot seafood da lu mian, $8.80 (small) (above) – Saw some patrons eating this dish during my first visit and it looked so good. So yes, one can say I came back specially for this dish. And it didn’t disappoint. But if one intends to share this, get the bigger portion. We really enjoyed the chewy noodles which was too little for 2 to have enough of since TSCP was more generous with the ingredients.

8) Traditional claypot rice, $13.80 (medium) (above)

I second my brother’s recommendation. I truly enjoyed the food at Traditional Sembawang Claypot Rice. If one is in Sembawang and is unsure of where to head to for a meal, do check them out! One must really get the claypot noodle. When I told my youngest brother that I went back for the claypot noodle, he said he too noticed that dish and would return for it. Keke. Great minds stomachs think alike.

Dinner @ Long Ji 龙记

September 12, 2017 in Chinese

These days I am pretty much into zi char. And Long Ji really caught my attention with their crab beehoon dish. So with that, reservation was made for 6 people for a weekday dinner. Eating in a big group for zi char is the best cause I can order lots. Keke.

And from the menu (pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5), we ordered:-

1) Kai lan stir fried with garlic, $10 (regular) (above)

2) Green dragon vegetable, $12 (regular) (above)

3) Salted egg pumpkin, $12 (regular) (above)

4) Minced pork omelette, $8 (regular) (above)

5) Fermented pork belly, $15 (regular) (above)

6) Salt & pepper pork rib, $13 (regular) (above)

7) Braised chicken in Taiwan style, $12 (regular) (above)

8) Long ji bee hoon crab, market price (above) – We followed the staff’s recommendation to order our dishes in regular size so that we could order their signature dish in a bigger serving. And for that, the staff mentioned he would get us a ~1.3kg crab. And it was definitely a good idea to get the crab beehoon in a bigger serving for us to have at least 2 bowls’ worth of the flavouful bee hoon. And it was as though the staff heard our thoughts because just when our dish was running low on the broth, he suddenly appeared with a big bowl for us to replenish. Too good. And for this dish, we paid $91.

9) Deep fried ice cream, $3 (per piece) (above) – With 4 flavours of chocolate, yam, strawberry and vanilla, we decided to go with 1 each. Keke.

My colleagues and I were extremely pleased with our dinner at Long Ji. I left the restaurant feeling really happy. There were no misses that night. All dishes that we ordered was a hit. And it was a big bonus that Long Ji’s food was very price-friendly too. We were surprised when our bill for 6 people was in the low $200 even with some orders for beer. And we were also dining in the comfort of air-conditioning.

Highly recommended!

Dinner @ Ban Leong Wah Hoe Seafood Restaurant 万隆华和海鲜菜馆

July 29, 2017 in Chinese

What was supposed to be a farewell dinner for my colleague has since become a team dinner because my colleague decided to stay on. Which is good of course!

I was sharing my bad experience at a tze char place when my colleague highly recommended Ban Leong. And thus, we were off to Ban Leong for dinner. But working in Paya Lebar, we had to drive to Thomson area. And driving to Ban Leong is least recommended because it’s not easy finding a parking lot.

And from the menu (pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9), we ordered:-

1) 苏东仔 (above) – Baby squid. This is a new dish compared to my usual dishes that I order for tze char. And it’s honestly pretty good! Akin to eating chips cause it’s so crispy. Keke.

This was okie. Nothing exceptional.

7) 辣椒螃蟹 (above) – Chili crab. This was the bomb! When we were re-confirming our order, the waitress said we have placed order for one 1.3kg crab ($60 per kg). One crab? Unaware that 1.3kg was really big, I nearly asked to increase to three crabs. Thanks goodness I didn’t cause the pincers were bigger than my fist! And it was so good.

8) 馒头 (above) – Fried bun. Beautifully fried bun to eat with the chili crab gravy!

9) 干炒寿面 (above) – Birthday noodle. And it was upon the staff’s recommendation that we ordered the noodle. And we enjoyed it. You know how some dishes just warm the soul? This dish did exactly that for me; Good old comfort food.

My team left Ban Leong feeling full and satisfied. Would I recommend them? A big yes from me for the food. But that’s also provided if one don’t mind the lack of air-conditioning and difficulty in parking.

I am unable to provide the price of the dishes because it was a treat from my supposedly leaving colleague. But I managed to get wind from the staff that dinner was an estimated $280 which included the 7 of us getting a drink (non-alcoholic) each.
