Dinner @ Gunther’s [Revisit]

August 7, 2014 in French by thywhaleliciousfay

It was one of those days where I was lazy to check my list of to-check-out restaurants, so my friend and I decided to head back to familiar restaurants. Restaurants where we had dined at before, and left us wanting more.

We were able to make reservation at Gunther’s, just 20 minutes prior to our arrival on a weekday evening.

As we looked through the menu, the specials for the night were also rolled out. For that night, besides having the tray of seafood, etc, they also had black truffle and French duck which were presented separately. For the truffle, the staff will slightly lift up the glass cover for us to get a good whiff of the aroma.

Similar to our previous visit to Gunther’s, we ordered most of our items from the specials again:-

1) Prawn tempura, Complimentary (above) – Amuse bouche, courtesy of the chef. Firm, sweet prawn meat with crispy tempura batter. But it’s kinda crazy that it’s still the same prawn tempura topped with mayonnaise, since my last visit in 2012. I guess when you are good at something, you stick to it?

2) Cold angel hair pasta, oscietra caviar, $40 (above) – The menu portion costs $60, but we requested for smaller portion so that we could try more dishes. And as always, their signature dish never fails. I will use the same description as I had for my previous post, which is ‘The pasta is smooth, refreshing and light while the caviar just burst in your mouth with flavour. Awesome.’ An absolutely must try!

3) Scallop with caviar, $68 (above) – We were asking for ways which we could have the truffle when the staff recommended scallop with truffle. However, as we had that in our previous visit (except it was white truffle. Not black), I specifically requested it to be presented differently. And with that, the staff immediately suggested doing scallop carpaccio with caviar instead. Which my friend and I agreed unanimously cause we really liked the idea. Haha. And the dish was impressive! Very thin slices of orange pulp were also added to the dish, which tanginess enhanced the sweetness of the scallop. I love how the dish was a combination of different textures; Smooth scallop meat, orange pulp and caviar which pops in the mouth.

4) Uni with scrambled egg and black truffle, $90 (above) – This was our (final) choice of ‘how we wanted to have our truffle’. Sea urchin was also one of the specials offered that night. I was not too impressed with the presentation. Upon quick glance, I actually mistaken the shaved truffle as the sea urchin shell (with its spikes shaved). Ha. But don’t judge a book by its cover. I was impressed by the taste.

5) Roasted French duck, $95 (above) – Similarly, this was one of the specials. This was normal, although the portion was huge. Should have requested for a smaller portion cause I could only finish half of it.

6) Fine apple tart “a la dragees”, $15 (above) – Served with Havana rum raisin ice-cream. We were contemplating which dessert to go with, when the staff recommended the apple tart, which is their signature dish. However, as he realised we were worried about being able to finish the dish, he suggested a smaller portion. Which we were up for it. A menu portion is at $20. And this was so good! The thin layer of apple pieces is wrapped within a pastry shell that’s crispy and not too heavy.

7) Petit four, Complimentary

As always, we enjoyed our experience at Gunther’s. I always enjoyed seeing how excited the staff gets as they dish out recommendation on how the specials can be served. Cause it goes to show how passionate the staff are about their jobs and their pride for the food that’s served at Gunther’s.

Dinner @ Petit Menu

November 9, 2013 in Asian, European, French by thywhaleliciousfay

I got to know about Petit Menu from seeing pictures of their deconstructed Blackforest on Instagram (Oh, the power of Instagram). Called the day before to make reservation, to arrive to an almost empty restaurant on a Wednesday night. There were 2 groups of diners.

And in all honesty, I would not have thought (of) checking this place out had I walked past it. The décor resembled that of a typical restaurant located at the hotel’s ground floor to cater to the needs of hotel guests. But! I am glad my friend and I came as the food exceeded all expectations.

Menu came in an unsuspecting piece of paper which gave no hints of the food which plating is befitting of a five-stars establishment!

And from the menu, my friend and I ordered:-

1) Tasting menu, $36 comprised of:-

(A) Lavender-scented pumpkin soup (above) – Part of the 4-courses tasting menu, soup was poured into the bowl in front of us. We polished everything off easily.

(B) Smoked duck salad (above) – Second dish of our tasting menu, the meat was tender and juicy. And they were pretty generous with the meat too. Very nicely done.

(C) Chicken confit (above) – The main for our $36 tasting menu, skin was crisp while meat was tender. Awesome! But I thought the greens on the sweet potato puree was slightly out of place.

(D) Blackforest (above) – Rounding up our 4-courses tasting menu with Belgian chocolate mousse, brandied cherries, hazelnut soil, caramel ice cream. Petit Menu joins Andre and Blu in offering dishes with edible soil. We loved the dessert, and I applaud the chef’s ingenuity of getting customers involved in pulling the dessert together; By ‘pouring’ the soil from the pot to the plate. A must try!

2) Mushroom risotto, $14 (above) – We ordered this in additional to the tasting menu. And it was perfect. A must try! The risotto was smooth and creamy, yet when we bit into the grains, there’s that little resistance like how a properly cooked risotto should be! We enjoyed the roasted mushroom broth vey much too.

3) Kaya Toast Mille Feuille, $7 (above) – Curious to know more, we ordered additional desserts. And my friend and I were not disappointed. We were left in awe of the presentation. We were seeing our traditional kaya toast and kopi-C in a different light! Yet another must try! Although I thought the greens were (again) redundant.

So yes, the dining experience was an awesome one! I say, Petit Menu is one restaurant to watch. We were treated to fine-dining standard of food, but at very affordable prices. As the saying goes “Do not judge a book by its cover”, I (also) say “Please do not judge the restaurant by its location”.

In fact, on my way home after dinner, I went to Instagram to look up more photographs and came across the profile of the man behind Petit Menu: Chef Nixon Low. Left a comment on one of his pictures, to which he replied! What he replied is not important. Rather, it’s the fact that he’s so approachable! I appreciate chefs who do not build a wall between themselves and their customers. Cause it shows that they are listening. =)

Dinner @ Shelter in the Woods

April 13, 2013 in European, French by thywhaleliciousfay

“There’s this new place at Greenwood which starts with a M. Let’s go there”, my girlfriend said over the phone. A quick search showed that there’re four new restaurants. However, none started with a M. Hmm…

And the venue being Greenwood, parking can be a little tricky as there’re limited carpark lots. Especially so when one is arriving at 8pm. And for those walking in, it can be a long walk if you get off the wrong bus stop.

Most of the restaurants were pretty empty on a Thursday night. All except for Shelter in the Woods which was really packed. Further intrigued by the décor of the restaurant, we decided to walk in.

We were offered counter seats as all of the tables were occupied. Yes, all! Once we were seated, the bartender immediately greeted us with a wide smile, promptly gave us the menu and introduced us to the specials.

And from the menu, we ordered:-

1) Pan seared foie gras, confit grapes and fresh apple, $20 (above) – With only a piece served, this is definitely not enough for more than two to share simply because the foie gras was so good! The foie gras, which melted in my mouth, went very well with the sauce.

2) Tarte flambee, $10 (above) – This french pizza of onion, bacon and cheese sure is addictive. I finished more than half of it. The crust which was very thin, was light yet not flaky as what one will expect from a crust that’s so thin. A must try.

3) Minute clam’s mariniere and purple artichoke barigoule, $23 (above) – This was recommended by the staff when we wanted to order one more appetizer. This was not too bad, though service wise, I thought it was a little weird we were not given spoon to scoop the gravy / soup.

4) Crispy skin suckling pig marinated with “aromates”, $35 (above) – This is the highlight of our dinner!!! So good! A must try. The meat was so tender and juicy. The skin, which was slightly crispy, was not easy to be further sliced into smaller pieces. But hey! The kitchen had already sliced the meat into biteable sizes. So what I did was to eat the meat on its own, leaving just enough meat to go into my mouth with the entire piece of skin. Pure bliss. And there’s something special about the mash potato. It’s as though cheese was mixed with it. The mash was silky and creamy.

5) Profiteroles, $12 (above) – This dessert was one of the specials. This was average.

6) Lemon tart with meringue, $9 – The second highlight of our dinner. So good! A must try. And because the meringue was in small droplets instead of one big scoop / swirl on the tart, every mouthful had the meringue melting in my mouth.

I definitely recommend Shelter in the Woods. And please remember to call to make reservation before coming. We were very lucky to be able to walk in. Our counter seats were just beside their phone, and for most of the incoming calls, we overheard the staff having had to politely reject people as they were full house. Wow. For a restaurant that’s only turning 3 months on 15th April, this place sure is doing well. And that’s fully understandable as the food is good with a really enthusiastic and friendly team of staff with a good sense of humour.
