Brunch @ Plain Vanilla Bakery

June 16, 2014 in American, European (cafe)

Plain Vanilla has been around for some time, so why the sudden post? That’s because while I have long heard about them, I have not tried their cupcakes. *Sheepish grin*

Was at Tiong Bahru Market with my girlfriends when one of them insisted that we are to go to Plain Vanilla. So wala! And I am glad she insisted because the cupcakes were so good! In fact, they were so good that I’ve made 2 (more) trips since.

The space is divided into two. First half is the non air-conditioned seating area, with second half being where the goodies are. No seats within this air-conditioned second half. Dining in will be a little tricky especially for a big group as seats are very limited.

Cupcakes are $3.50 each or $19 for every six. Permanent flavours include carrot, cinnamon brown sugar, chocolate hazelnut, cookies & cream, dark chocolate ganache, milk chocolate banana, milk chocolate chip, strawberry white chocolate and red velvet. Dont go too late though. On my 2nd (of 3) trip back, only 3 flavours were left at 5pm.

Cupcakes are packed into these beautiful boxes! Do note that you will need to get at least 4 to be packed into a box. Tried to purchase 3 on my 2nd trip and was told I had to get 4 before my cupcakes can be packed into the box. Hmm… But what if I only had cash for 3 and I had specially made a trip for these cupcakes? You want to put them in plastic bags or ask me to walk empty handed? (I got 4, by the way. 2 repeated flavour)

And from the display, I ordered (from my 2nd and 3rd trips):-

1) Red velvet, $3.50 (above)

2) Cinnamon brown sugar, $3.50 (above)

3) Milk chocolate banana, $3.50 (above)

4) Salted caramel, $3.50 (above)

5) Cookies & cream, $3.50 (above)

6) Carrot, $3.50 (above)

7) Milk chocolate chip, $3.50 (above)

8) Strawberry white chocolate, $3.50 (above)

My favourite will be the strawberry white chocolate! The cupcakes were light and moist, while the frosting was not too sweet and in a right proportion. Even my siblings loved it when I brought the cupcakes back to share. So yes, I will recommend dropping by to buy some back when you are cafe hopping in Tiong Bahru vicinity.

Cupcakes @ Swirls Bake Shop

November 6, 2013 in American, European (cafe)

Having seen pictures of Swirls (pretty) cupcakes on Instagram, I was happy to (be able to) drop by Rodyk Street on a weekday afternoon. And I was happier to see that the cupcakes were not swept out, which I heard will normally be so by afternoon on a weekend.

And to fully utilise the takeaway box, I decided to buy 6 regular-sized ones! Ain the cupcakes prettyyyyy? I like the way the frosting is being done. So chic!

And from the display, I ordered:-

1) Very Vanilla, $3.95 (regular) (above) – Vanilla cupcake with vanilla butter cream frosting & sprinkles. This was so good! The cupcake was moist and dense. As the frosting was a tad too sweet (and too much too), the entire cupcake was polished with just one-third of the frosting.

2) Red Velvet, $3.95 (regular) (above) – Crimson chocolate cupcake with cream cheese frosting. Cupcake was dense, moist and not too sweet. A must try!

3) Nutella, $3.95 (regular) (above) – Chocolate cupcake with hazelnut butter cream frosting. And it’s called Nutella because Swirls put nutella right in the center of the cupcake. Nice! And before I sound like a parrot, the cupcake was moist. Thumbs up!

4) Strawberry Burst, $3.95 (regular) (above) – This sadly did not taste as good as it looks. The cupcake was dry which was pretty evident when I sliced through the cupcake with my knife. And the bottom was slightly burnt.

5) What’s Up Doc?, $3.95 (regular) (above) – Carrot caupcake with crushed pinapple & cream cheese frosting. Both the frosting and cupcake were not too sweet. But oddly, the cupcake left a weird after taste in the mouth. Essence is suspected to be the culprit.

6) Tuesday Special : Apple & Walnut, $4.25 (regular) (above) – Apple and walnut cupcake with cream cheese frosting. A must try! Cupcake was moist with generous amount of bite-able granny smith apple bits. Yummy!

Overall, the cupcakes were good. I guess the misses were probably due to a little lack of inconsistency in baking? So yes, Swirls have 101 flavours. I say, it’s time to start buying (and eating) if you wish to try them all! And for the budget conscious, there’s the tiny size at $2.50 (exclude special flavours which are priced differently from the regular flavours). But I say, “Get the regular sizes!” You cant really taste the goodness in the tiny size. Or should I better say, the tiny size wont be enough to satisfy your appetite! =) And for those who are interested, these are November’s specials (above)!
