Dinner @ Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice

It has been a long while since my last siblings’ dinner out. My younger brother suggested heading to Traditional Sembawang Claypot Rice (TSCP) because he recently chanced upon the place and enjoyed the food at TSCP much. So yes! If it’s approved by my brother, I am sure it’s good.

And boy was my brother right.

The thing about zi char… It’s always better to come in a big group. So when my siblings and I went, we could only order 4 dishes. And because I enjoyed the food so much, I popped by 5 days later with a colleague for late dinner. Keke.

Reservation is a definite must if one is coming during peak hours or in big groups. My sibling assisted with the reservation and shared that the restaurant took down his contact number only. Hmm. Not of his name too?

But of course, the con about the location was parking. If one intends to park at the lots within the private house estate, please make sure to put parking coupon! When colleague and I arrived on the second occasion at 9pm, he decided to take the risk of not putting since free parking starts at 10pm. Bad move. We joked that the parking attendant must be staying in one of the landed properties because my colleague’s ticket was timed 9.12pm. Gasp.

And from the menu (pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), we ordered:-


1) Crispy salted egg sotong, $12.80 (above)


2) Hakka crispy pork, $12.80 (above)


3) Garlic fried chicken, $12.80 (above)

4) Qing long cai, $12.80 (above)


5) San lao bee hoon, $8.80 (large) (above) – Let’s be real… I think san lao beehoon is almost synonymous with J.B Ah Meng. So although it wasn’t fair to compare the two since they are cooked with different style, comparing was still inevitable. And the difference between the two was TSCR’s was paler in colour and the burnt surface was not as charred. But the (real) distinct difference was TSCR’s was cooked with prawn, pork, egg and vegetables and was wet with (some) gravy at the bottom. TSCR’s was still enjoyable, but not my favourite rendition of san lao beehoon.


6) La la bee hoon, $4.80 (small) (above)


  

7) Claypot seafood da lu mian, $8.80 (small) (above) – Saw some patrons eating this dish during my first visit and it looked so good. So yes, one can say I came back specially for this dish. And it didn’t disappoint. But if one intends to share this, get the bigger portion. We really enjoyed the chewy noodles which was too little for 2 to have enough of since TSCP was more generous with the ingredients.


8) Traditional claypot rice, $13.80 (medium) (above)

I second my brother’s recommendation. I truly enjoyed the food at Traditional Sembawang Claypot Rice. If one is in Sembawang and is unsure of where to head to for a meal, do check them out! One must really get the claypot noodle. When I told my youngest brother that I went back for the claypot noodle, he said he too noticed that dish and would return for it. Keke. Great minds stomachs think alike.

Dinner @ Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck Restaurant

When 2 people happened to recommend Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck over a course of 2 weeks, that was a sign that I had better check out the restaurant. And the opportunity came when my colleagues and I were to arrange a get-together, and the cuisine had to be Chinese for the uncle colleague in the group. Keke. Thus, with everyone’s consensus, reservation was made for 5 for a weekday dinner.

Located conveniently in Paragon, one need not worry about finding parking lot if one chose to drove. Instead, one just need to worry about the expensive parking fee. zZZz.

And from the menu (pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11), my colleagues and I ordered:-


1) Fried century egg with shrimp paste, $12 (above) – This was like the Chinese’s version of scotch egg. Pretty good.


2) Chinese yam with blueberries sauce, $12 (above) – Served as a cold dish, this unfortunately tasted weird. We couldn’t make out of the unique combination.

3) Fried squid with pepper & salt, $12 (above)


4) Barbecue pork with honey sauce, $27 (medium) (above)

5) Stewed pork collar & lettuce with shrimp sauce in claypot, $20 (small) (above)


  

6) Braised spinach beancurd with assorted mushrooms, $20 (small) (above)

7) Steamed turbot fish with superior soy sauce, $15/100g (above)

8) Beijing style roasted duck, $88 (whole):-

  
  

(A) Style #1 (above) – Wrapped with pancake. Advanced order is required for this dish. And unknown to me, the chef actually stationed himself near our table to skin the roasted duck. I didn’t know because the action took place behind me. Sob! And it’s weird that we specially came for the duck dish but we were not too impressed by it. Uncle colleague said the meat texture felt slightly powdery.

(B) Style #2 (above) – And we chose to have the remaining meat fried with e-fu noodles.


  

9) Double boiled fish maw soup with shark’s cartilage, $30 (above) – One of my must orders at Chinese restaurant is double boiled soup. And I went with the fish maw soup as it’s also the restaurant’s signature dish. And the soup was thick and rich with a generous amount of ingredients. Really good. Strongly recommended.

10) Double boiled hashima with lotus seed, $10 (above)

Although we weren’t impressed by every dishes, it was a satisfying dinner for us at Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck Restaurant. Though I would strongly encourage one to look at the ‘advanced order menu’ before making reservation; There were a few dishes (like the charcoal grilled quail and crispy chicken stuffed with glutinous rice) which interested me but we couldn’t order as advanced order was required. Sob.

Dim sum @ Jade

My girlfriend was raving about the food at Jade after her dinner at the restaurant. And since I was craving for dim sum, I thought it would be a good idea for us to head over to Jade. Thankfully my girlfriend didn’t mind returning too. Keke. And for the a-la carte dim sum buffet, Jade has 2 seatings; 11am and 1.15pm. My girlfriend assisted to call and make reservation for the later slot.

Located in The Fullerton Hotel, I arrived slightly early at 12.50pm on the day of our dim sum date. But it was weird there was no staff stationed at the receptionist stand. So I stood around with what looked like fellow customers who have arrived early and was waiting for the appearance of a staff. And at 1.05pm, after the tables were set and ready for second seating, the receptionist finally appeared.

And it was only during our visit that I realised Jade underwent a recent refurbishment with pastel blue wallpaper. Apparently the colour was chosen because it reflected the lustre of jade.

And from the menu, we ordered:-

1) Dim sum with options of:


(A) 01: Deep fried taro paste wrapped with truffles and mushrooms (above)


(B) 02: Crispy prawn dumpling (above)


(C) 03: Pan-fried seafood bean curd roll (above)

(D) 05: Pan-fried radish cake (above)

  

(E) 06: Pan-fried minced pork and chives “guo tie” (above)


(F) 07: Baked fresh milk bun (above)

(G) 08: Steamed glutinous rice wrapped in lotus leaf (above) – With chicken and mushrooms.

(H) 09: Steamed crystal shrimp dumpling (above)

(I) 10: Steamed pork siew mai with abalone (above)

(J) 11: Steamed pork rib with black bean sauce (above)

(K) 12: Steamed chicken feet with oyster sauce (above) – This was pretty good.


(L) 15: Steamed osmanthus char siew pau (above)

3) Appetiser with options of:

(A) 26: Crispy honey vinaigrette sliced sea bass (above)

(B) 28: Roasted five-spiced and sea salt pork belly (above, left)

(C) 31: Honey-glazed “char siew” (above, right)

(D) 29: Deep-fried prawns coated with wasabi mayonnaise (above)


(E) 34: Deep-fried century egg (above)

4) Main course with options of:

(A) 36: Stir-fried french beans with minced garlic (above)

(B) 42: Sauteed pork ribs with coffee sauce (above)

5) Congee/noodles/rice with options of:

(A) 48: Wok-fried silver needle noodles in hometown style (above)

(B) 52: Boiled congee with lobster and dried scallop (above)

6) Dessert with options of:

(A) 53: Dessert of the Day (cold) (above)

(B) 55: Oven-baked egg tart (above)

With only 1.5 hours for our a-la carte dim sum buffet, it was a little rushed as my friends and I attempted catch up while trying to eating lots at the same time. Buffet mah.

One should note that the kitchen takes some time to prepare the food after passing the staff the order slip. I reckon it’s because most tables are giving their order slips at almost the same time. So when one is trying to order more before ‘last order’, one should do it earlier for the food to come out faster and to allow oneself sufficient time to enjoy the food. That said, my friends and I weren’t too impressed with food. It was good but it didn’t wow-ed us.

One should also be careful of the units; Piece and quantity. The order slip indicated the chicken feet was by pieces. So when we first ordered, we wrote ‘2’ and were served a basket with 2 pieces. And because we really enjoyed it, we re-ordered as 4 (pieces). But we were taken aback when we were given 4 baskets. Hmm…

Would I recommend Jade? Well… Honestly, I had better dim sum experiences elsewhere.
