Brunch @ The Fabulous Baker Boy

January 23, 2013 in European (cafe) by thywhaleliciousfay

Itching to brunch, my girlfriend suggested The Fabulous Baker Boy. Having not heard about the place and that they only serve brunch on Sundays, I was all game. And just when I was wondering what was located within The Foothills (which is across the street from Liang Court) the previous night, I was surprised at the sheer coincidence to learn that we were to head to The Foothills.

One can easily find The Fabulous Baker Boy, which occupies a unit at the further end, after walking past the NParks offices. And the café is not big. There’s only a small table (for 6) in the café with most of the tables placed outside. And without stating the obvious, we had to wait as we did not make any reservation.

But we well spent the 15 minutes by checking out the pastry corner and studying the menu. Dont forget to check out the fridge as there’re more cakes inside. And talking about the menu, I was surprised when the staff was not joking when he said there’s only one menu. And that one menu is at the cashier. Hmm… I wouldn want to imagine how cramp the café will be when various groups of people crowd around just to steal a glance of the menu.

And from the menu, my girlfriend and I ordered:-

1) Apple cider pancakes, $8.50 (above) – This was decent. There was a very strong aroma when the slightly burnt pancakes were served with the syrup already poured. And while we could not detect the cider taste, it was pleasant to find apple pieces in the batter.

2) Towkay ng’s egg benedict, $10.50 (above) – We were presented with two almost identically poached eggs. What set The Fabulous Baker Boy’s egg benedict apart from the rest is that spinach was used. However, the hollandaise sauce was a little sour.

3) Chicken, leek and potato pie ver. 2.0 (above) – The pot pie, which was served piping hot, comprised of really tasty puff pastry crust and thick filling. However, some of the chicken bits were a little dry. But that’s the nature of chicken breast meat.

4) Red velvet cake, $8.50 (above) – The staff recommended this, calling it the ladies’ favourite. And I can totally understand why. The cake was moist, not too sweet and absolutely yummy. A must try! But of course, my eagle-eyed friend noticed that of the four layers, only the middle two were red. Well, I did not mind that as long as the cake is yummy.

5) Lemon vanilla raspberry cake, $8.50 (above) – This was light in terms of flavour as compared to the other two cakes. However, the pastry flakes used were no longer crisp. It’s almost similar to cornflakes which had been exposed to air for too long and lost its crunch. It could be due to the fact that the pasty flakes were left in the fridge longer than it should have.

6) Salted caramel cake, $7.50 (above) – It’s a nice visual to see the caramel sauce oozing out from the layers of cake. However, while the cake is enjoyable as a whole (whole = cake + frosting + caramel sauce), the cake was a little dry on its own.

7) Latte (above) – Decent coffee.

Overall, it’s a nice place to chill out. However, as most of the seats are alfresco, it will also depend on the weather. We were lucky it was drizzling such that the weather was enjoyable for us to be seated outside. They seemed a little short on staff, as we noticed tables were not cleared promptly after leaving customers. But that’s probably why almost everything is self service. There’s a central spot for customers to take iced water and cutlery.
